Rancho Penasquitos, also known as PQ, is a town that lies in the northeastern part of San Diego North County. Penasquitos, which
is Spanish for little cliffs, has grown quite significantly in the last 20 years and is home to over 50,000 residents. The community
is easy to identify from miles away because of its most distinguishing feature, Black Mountain, which rises to an elevation of 1,500
feet. Much like Poway, which borders it to the east, Penasquitos has many dirt roads and trails that are ideal for hiking, biking,
and horseback riding.
Most of the recent development in PQ is a direct result of the completion of State Route 56, which
links many of the inland areas to the coast. Most of the expansion is to the west of Black Mountain and includes several
master planned communities, scattered, small shopping centers, and a new high school, Westview High. Penasquitos is also home
to Rancho Penasquitos Little League Baseball, which for years was the largest Little League in the nation. Since most of the
homes built in recent years are along the way to the coast, the average price of a home in Rancho Penasquitos has risen to well above
$350,000.
Bring your backpack, a mountain bike, and some hiking boots, and explore the 4,000 acres that make up the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve.
The canyon is home to over 400 plant and 175 bird species, many of which are on the endangered list and protected by law.
The Doubletree Golf Resort in San Diego features several luxurious rooms, modern amenities and year-round golf on a 72-par, 18 hole
course. Its central location is perfect because it provides easy access to both the northern and southern parts of San Diego
County.
