The city of Del Mar, California is located along the coast in the northwestern part of San Diego County. The city’s heritage
dates back to the late 1800’s when the area was designated as the most beautiful part of the coast by a man named Theodore Loop. He discovered the land while working for the Southern California Railroad which ran between San Diego and San Bernadino. The
area, which was known as Casa Del Mar, was originally intended to be a resort for the rich and famous. During the 1920’s the
town experienced a boom period as a result of receiving electricity from San Diego Gas and Electric. The City of Del Mar was
officially incorporated in 1959 and is today the home of about 4,500 residents.
The town offers its residents and visitor 2.5
miles of beautiful beach that is perfect for surfing, swimming, and body-boarding. Much like La Jolla, Del Mar is an affluent
community and has many upscale restaurants and shops for people to enjoy. The crown jewel of the community, though, is the Del
Mar Fairgrounds which is home of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, a paradise for the horse racing enthusiast. The fairgrounds
are also host to the San Diego County Fair which runs every year from June 8th until its final day extravaganza on July 4th. Immediately to the northeast of Del Mar lies the community of Rancho Santa Fe, which is one of the richest areas in the United States.
The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club opened in 1937 and was a joint venture between Bing Crosby, Jimmy Durante, Pat O'Brian, and Charles
S. Howard. Racing season starts in Mid-July and runs through September. The Club also offers a state of the art off-track
wagering facility.
Rancho Santa Fe is known as the second highest income community in the nation and is home to several of the rich and famous.
Most of the multi-million dollar homes are hidden by acres of beautifully landscaped land. The community has a small downtown
area with small cafes and boutiques.
The San Diego County Fair, formerly known as the Del Mar Fair, features six exhibit halls totalling over 219,000 square feet of space.
Prepare for a day of fun while eating funnel-cakes, viewing numerous attractions, and riding the zany rides on the Midway.
Del Mar Beach is a favorite spot for both locals and tourists. It offers several family friendly areas where people can set
up a picnic and enjoy the beautiful landscape. The beach is perfect for walkers, swimmers, surfers, and body-boarders.
