Poway, California is located in the inland area of North San Diego County and is known as the “City in the Country”. The city’s
roots go back hundreds of years when the Diegueno and Luiseno Indians roamed the area known as beautiful valley of Poway (Pau-wi). The earliest settlers arrived in the late 1800’s and used the valley’s rich soil to grow orchards and vineyards. The biggest
change in Poway’s history was during the 1950’s, when water came to the valley via the Poway Municipal Water District. In 1972,
the Poway Dam was built to provide the area with a dependable water supply. The City of Poway was officially incorporated on
December 1, 1980.
Today, Poway is known as a city with a country-western flavor. This can be seen with the many dirt roads
and trails still in existence for hikers and horseback riders. Poway is also home to Poway Lake and the Blue Sky Nature Preserve. Poway High School (The Titans) is known nationally for its academic excellence and its many accolades in athletics and its marching
band, The Emerald Brigade. The city is currently home to just over 50,000 residents and the average price of a home is over
$350,000. The community of Rancho Bernardo borders Poway to the north and the fast growing town of Rancho Penasquitos bordersPoway to the west.
